2-month ban on fishing in Bangladesh!
2-month ban on fishing in Bangladesh!
A ban on fishing for all types of fish, including Hilsa, is going to start from midnight on Friday, February 28, in six sanctuaries of the country, including Padma and Meghna. The ban will be in force until April 30, 2025. If caught by law enforcement agencies and fishers violate this ban, they can be sentenced to at least one to two years in prison or a maximum fine of five thousand taka, or both, according to the law. However, the government will provide 160 kg of rice food assistance to 40,050 registered fishermen during the ban. During this period, the fishermen will repair their fishing equipment, boats, and trawlers.
It is worth noting that the government has banned all types of fishing in the river for two months from March to April since 2006 in order to increase the production of Hilsa and ensure the safe and free movement of Jatkas in the river. During the ban, casting nets, harvesting fish, buying and selling, storing and transporting them are completely prohibited in a designated area of about 70 kilometers around Chandpur.
The district administration, fisheries department, naval police, coast guard and navy have taken all kinds of preparations to implement the said sanctuary.
Chandpur District Fisheries Officer Golam Mehedi Hasan told the media that the campaign to protect the jatka has been completed in the fishing villages. In addition, the rice distribution program scheduled for them will start. The jatka protection campaign will be strict like the mother hilsa protection campaign. The fisheries department has taken all kinds of measures so that unscrupulous fishermen cannot enter the river in the sanctuary.
